LEON WALTON YOUNG
1876 - 1962

Leon Walton Young was born in Congo Town, Fox Hill, Nassau, Bahamas on May 11th, 1876.

Young was a carpenter, contract, property developer, businessman and politician. In his early 20s he moved to Key West, Florida where he worked for a few years before coming back to Nassau. Upon his return he began making a name for himself as a reliable and competent contractor.

In 1912 he was elected to the House of Assembly as a Member of Parliament for the New Providence Eastern District serving as the representative until 1942. In 1926 he was awarded lucrative sub-contracts for the construction of Fort Montagu Hotel.

As a property developer one of his best known projects is an area on the south side of Bernard Road, that later became known as Village Estates. He also built a small night-club and hotel which he named the Walia Hotel.

Leon Young died on July 30, 1962 after suffering a stroke. He was 86 years old.

The L. W. Young Junior High School on Bernard Road was named in his honour.
